Getting off the ground!

Taking Plastic Free July a step further, Plastic Free Kaitaia 2020 is working on reducing Kaitaia’s reliance on plastic packaging, leading to a ban on plastic bags and water bottles.

This involves continuing to raise awareness about the concerns around plastic use by:

– approaching businesses to charge for plastic bags with a view to eliminating them and offer alternatives

– encouraging local takeaway outlets and food places, such as butchers to gain support for customers bringing in their own takeout containers

– working with local cafes to provide incentives to customers to bring in their own takeaway coffee cups

Businesses supporting this effort would be given a poster to display making customers aware of their involvement.

It is hoped to produce a logo to put on reuseable bags, takeaway cups and containers etc for sale both as tourist items and for locals, encouraging a sense of pride in both this town and this initiative.
