The EcoCentre is a physical hub for community groups working in the Far North with an environmental and sustainability focus.
We bring together individuals, groups and local government to bolster the resilience of our local community drawing on a strong tradition of kaitiakitanga, or stewardship, which has long defined the Māori relationship with land and sea, and now inspires new generations of residents from all backgrounds.
The EcoCentre is managed by Te Pokapū Tiaki Taiao O Te Tai Tokerau Trust (Far North Environment Centre). It was realized a few years ago that there were many groups in Kaitaia and the Far North striving towards the same goals, each with limited resources, and so the EcoCentre evolved as a place to bring together such groups to promote networking, provide a point of contact, information and resources to the public, and to provide an office base. It is staffed by a team of volunteers drawn from across the groups involved, along with admin support and project staff when funded projects allow.
